L-R: The 2013 Yorktown GOP endorsed slate of Michael Grace, Terrence Murphy, Dorothy Forcina, Greg Bernard and Sal Lagonia turned in 1,039 Republican signatures to the Board of Elections on July 9th, 2013, which was 651 more than the minimum 388 signatures required to run as a Republican. The annual petition process is a major requirement in the process for the name of a candidate to appear on the ballot on the party-line they are seeking. In Yorktown, Democrats are required to submit 430 signatures, Conservatives 26 and 59 are required for the Independence Party.

YORKTOWN, NY – The Yorktown Republican Town Committee submitted its designating petitions for its endorsed Republican candidates today to the Westchester County Board of Elections, turning in an impressive 1,039 signatures. The candidates are among the first dozen candidates in the entire County to submit their petitions thus far.
“Thanks to the hard work of our candidates and district leaders, our local slate has turned in nearly three times the required number of signatures in what is the best showing for a local slate in my seven years as Chair,” said Serafina Mastro, chairwoman of the Yorktown Republican Town Committee. “So many Republicans were willing to sign this year because our team of candidates embodies the spirit of Yorktown and a strong Republican message of lower taxes, reduced spending and smaller, more efficient government.”
The slate includes incumbent Supervisor Michael Grace, Councilman Terrence Murphy, Town Justice Sal Lagonia and new candidates Dorothy Forcina for Town Board and Greg Bernard for Highway Superintendent.
A minimum of 388 valid signatures are required to be submitted run on the Republican line in Yorktown, prior to July 11th. The Yorktown GOP’s petition far exceeds this requirement, containing signatures from fourteen percent of the town’s active registered Republicans.
Turning in such a large number of signatures in excess of the minimum is generally considered by political pundits to be a sign of strength and great grassroots enthusiasm, Mastro noted. “Since 2009, the Westchester GOP has twice named your Yorktown Republican Town Committee as ‘Committee of the Year’ for our many successes. These include turning a 1-4 deficit on the Town Board into a 4-1 majority, electing 2 Republican Judges and delivering Yorktown for Mitt Romney in 2012 as well Senator Greg Ball and Assemblyman Steve Katz,” she said.
“2013 is once again shaping up to be another banner year for Republicans in Westchester and Yorktown especially,” Mastro said. “We are confident about re-electing County Executive Rob Astorino, Legislator John Testa, Supervisor Grace, Councilman Murphy and Judge Lagonia, as well as electing Mary Beth Murphy our next County Clerk, putting Dorothy Forcina on the town board, electing Greg Bernard Highway Superintendent and Greg Kane for Legislator.”
