MURPHY ASKS: ‘WHERE DOES IDONI STANDO ON SILVER?’

Women including Somers Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy want Tim Idoni to call for the resignation of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver in light of the Vito Lopez sex assault coverup. Women including Somers Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy want Tim Idoni to call for the resignation of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver in light of the Vito Lopez sex assault coverup.Westchester County Clerk candidate Mary Beth Murphy (R, C, I – Somers) today roundly criticized her opponent for failing to call on Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to step down in the growing wake of the Vito Lopez sexual harassment cover-up.
“Tim Idoni failed to demonstrate judgment and concern for the rights of women when he dangerously released the home addresses of domestic violence victims, and he fails again by remaining silent while the leader of his party makes a mockery of the rights of women in the workplace,” Murphy said. “Neither Tim Idoni, his New Rochelle colleague Noam Bramson, nor any of the seven Westchester Democratic members of the Assembly have the courage to do what is right and speak out against Sheldon Silver. The women of Westchester deserve better.”
Murphy, who is in her seventh term as Somers Town Supervisor, is one of many public officials to call on Silver to resign.
Last year Silver took an active role in covering up the sexual harassment charges against Vito Lopez, a powerful member of his caucus, including authorizing secret payments of more than $100,000 of taxpayer money to the victims. The Joint Committee on Public Ethics (JCOPE) admonished Silver for his actions and his staff’s failure to actively investigate the complaints.
The Daily News later highlighted how JCOPE appointees, three of whose members are recommended by the Speaker, deleted one or more damning emails that showed the extent of Silver’s involvement in the cover-up. In an earlier incident, Silver was accused of covering up an alleged rape by a top aide, Michael Boxley, who was later arrested and convicted of sexual assault.
“Count Clerk Idoni should immediately call on Sheldon Silver to resign as speaker before more women are subjected to this inhumane treatment while in his employ,” Murphy said. “If the women of Westchester cannot trust Tim Idoni to stand up for us to Sheldon Silver, how can we trust him in the County Clerk’s office.”
The Daily News has also reported Attorney General Eric Schneiderman informed Silver today that he is eligible to use taxpayer monies to pay legal expenses stemming from at least two lawsuits filed against him by the women were victimized by Lopez.-30-
