Albany, NY – (6/21/13) – Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R,C,I – Fishkill) today announced that the Assembly has passed his bill A.7547 which grants an unused parcel of land at the Green Haven correctional facility to the not-for-profit Safe Haven Animal Shelter and Wildlife Center. It is Lalor’s first bill to pass the Assembly. Safe Haven will build a new facility on the property.
“I’m excited to be working with Safe Haven on this project,” said Lalor. “When I first met Safe Haven president Josephine Santoro I was impressed by her passion and dedication. She has a plan that is going to make this center a valuable asset to communities in Southern Dutchess. She’s even doing it without costing the taxpayers anything. The property was unused and it won’t cost the state anything to grant Safe Haven the property. It’s a great idea. The government should work with not-for-profits on similar projects that help the community with state aid, but come at little to no cost to taxpayers. We need more of that kind of outside-the-box thinking in New York.”
The bill passed the Senate, sponsored by Sen. Greg Ball (R,C,I – Patterson), earlier this month and is expected to be signed into law by the governor. Safe Haven Animal Shelter and Wildlife Center is a not-for-profit organized in 2009. The facility on the former Green Haven property will be an educational and rehabilitation center providing temporary shelter, veterinary care, as well as love and rehabilitation for all animals. Sick, injured and orphaned wildlife will be rehabilitated with the ultimate goal of being released back out into the wild. The shelter will provide the following services and educational programs to the public: classes in proper care and nutrition of pets, CPR and first aid for pets, dog training, how to co-exist with wildlife, and a feral cat low cost neutering/spaying clinic in order to help reduce the overpopulation problem.
