Statement on “Poison Pill” Removal from Women’s Equality Act

Chiaroscuro Foundation

June 19, 2013

“The Chiaroscuro Foundation applauds Governor Cuomo’s decision to create separate bills within the Women’s Equality Act. There are nine laudable measures in the Act, and they deserve to be liberated from the 10th, which was serving as a poison pill.

“We are appreciative of the wisdom of the Senate Majority conference for standing firmly against the abortion expansion provision, which was never a codification of federal law. Unlike current federal law, that provision would have prevented any restrictions on abortions up to nine months, allowing unthinkable crimes against viable babies and making New York, already the Abortion Capital of America, a safe-haven for late term abortionists.

“We urge swift passage of the nine other measures and even swifter action in discarding the 10th into the dustbin of terrible ideas.”
