Albany, NY – (6/12/13) – Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R,C,I – Fishkill) today released a 6-second video on Twitter’s Vine, criticizing Governor Andrew Cuomo for continuing to support Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver despite Silver’s enabling of and covering for serial sexual harassment and abuse.
“The governor just doesn’t get it,” said Lalor. “He can’t stand by Silver and then turn around and promote his women’s rights agenda. It’s the height of hypocrisy. The ethics reports clearly show that Silver covered for Vito Lopez’s abuse and harassment of female staffers. Silver had no intention of punishing Lopez until the cover-up was revealed. Silver enabled an environment where sexual harassment was rampant. Lopez wasn’t even the first cover-up. Before Lopez there was Michael Boxley, Silver’s former chief of staff, and his sexual misconduct conviction. There is a pattern here.”
Lalor’s video features Governor Cuomo’s response to reporters in Poughkeepsie on June 6th when he was asked how he can promote a women’s rights agenda, but refuse to call for Silver to step down. The governor told reporters, “I just don’t see what one thing has to do with the other.” The video can be found here.
Lalor added, “It’s unbelievable that the governor doesn’t understand the connection between women’s rights and removing Sheldon Silver from office. Silver enabled sexual harassment. The governor says his bill aims to crack down on sexual harassment. A recent poll showed that most New Yorkers would be uncomfortable with their daughters working in the legislature. That’s because of the atmosphere Silver has enabled. The connection is obvious.”
“It’s time for the governor to do the right thing and call for Silver to go,” concluded Lalor. “This isn’t a partisan issue. Editorial boards across the state, including the New York Times, have called for Silver’s removal. Even the head of the New York State chapter of NOW is calling for Silver to go. It’s long past time for the governor to join them.”
