SENATOR GREG BALL PASSES BILL TO PROTECT PRIVACY OF AIRPORT BODY SCAN IMAGES

Albany, N.Y. – (5/24/2013) – Senator Greg Ball (R,C,I-Patterson) Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee announced that S2583, legislation that will make the misuse of body scanner images a crime in New York State, has passed the New York State Senate.

The law addresses concerns raised by travelers after hundreds of images from body scanners were published on the Internet after being obtained by a Freedom of Information Act request.

“In a post 9/11 world, airport security must remain our number one goal,” said Senator Greg Ball. “However, it is possible to protect the privacy of our residents without compromising safety, and this bill aims to do just that.”

The legislation will make it a Class A Misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in prison, for those employees who take advantage of their position of authority.

The bill has been sent to the Assembly.
