Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor
I am happy to see that disgraced misogynist Vito Lopez resigned from the Assembly today. However, Sheldon Silver, who enabled and covered up Lopez’s sexual harassment of female staffers, remains the most powerful man in New York State. Why do I say that Silver is more powerful even than Governor Cuomo? Because despite Silver losing three of his members to corruption charges in the last six weeks with more under indictment or investigation, Cuomo still lacks the courage to call for Silver to step down as Speaker. We will never reform Albany if we don’t stand up to Silver. Silver’s Assembly is where all meaningful reforms go to die. Earlier this month Silver even blocked a bill in committee that would have taken pensions away from politicians convicted of felonies. Unemployment in New York is almost eight percent. The average New Yorker with a job earns under $50,000. Vito Lopez collected a hefty state salary while terrorizing female staffers. After his resignation today he will continue to receive a taxpayer funded pension of $64,000 per year. Is it any wonder New Yorkers have been fleeing the state in droves? During the 2012 campaign the press allowed Democrat incumbents and challengers to dodge the question of whether they would vote for Silver for Speaker. The press accepted a packaged answer about waiting to see what the results of an investigation revealed. The investigation is complete. Vito Lopez’s behavior is more disgusting than most imagined. He not only abused these women repeatedly, when they left his staff he attacked their new employers in an attempt to ruin their careers.
We now know that Silver covered up Lopez’s sexual abuse and abuse of power for years. We also know that Lopez’s attacks on women continued after the corrupt bargain between Lopez, Silver, Attorney General Schneiderman and Comptroller DiNapoli. It was only after the shady agreement was leaked that Lopez ceased the abuse. It is clear from the report that so long as Lopez’s sexual abuse of women was not known, Silver would allow it to continue. The recently released investigation also reveals that the agreement to use taxpayer funds to silence Lopez’s victims was confidential, not to protect the privacy of the young women Lopez abused, but because Lopez requested that his behavior not be made public and Silver obliged. The New York Post, New York Daily News and even the New York Times have called for Silver to step down as Speaker. Yet the Governor and the Assembly Democrats Silver has controlled for two decades have not done so. This sad episode in our state’s history presents a real opportunity for bipartisanship. I am certain that most, if not all forty-two Republican Members would join in a coalition with anti-Silver Democrats to oust Silver and elect a new Democrat Speaker who is not corrupt. If thirty-four of the more than one hundred Democrat Members joined the Republicans to oust Silver, we could have new leadership in the Assembly tomorrow. I am confident that at least one-third of my Democrat colleagues have the courage to reject Silver and his corruption and elect a new Speaker of The People’s House. You know where I stand. I am 100% in favor of removing Sheldon Silver as Speaker! Please Call your Member of the Assembly Today and find out where they stand.
