Somers Town Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy speaks to a crowd of supporters during her April 2nd Westchester County Clerk campaign kick-off at Le Fontane restaurant in Katonah.Westchester Republicans believe they have recruited a top-tier challenger to face Westchester County Clerk Tim Idoni this November. Their challenger, Somers Town Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy, launched her campaign yesterday in Katonah, where she was joined by a throng of supporters.
“As an elected officials we can never forget that our decisions and actions effect real people’s lives,” Murphy said. “As Supervisor I have remained in close touch with the people that I represent and I will continue to do so as Westchester County Clerk.”
Murphy says that as County Clerk, she will combine her skills as a competent town administrator and an attorney fully familiar with the workings of the Court. She says that she is committed to thoughtful judgment in decisions to protect the public’s interest and privacy.
Murphy was elected as the first female Supervisor of Somers in 1998. The town of Somers enjoys the lowest municipal tax rate in Westchester County, an accomplishment Murphy highlighted to the group at Le Fontaine Restaurant where the event took place.
Mary Beth has been a strong and effective leader for the residents of Somers over the last fifteen years,” County Executive Rob Astorino said. “I’m thrilled she has decided to take her expertise as a town supervisor and attorney to serve all of the county’s residents. Westchester would be fortunate to have a smart, dynamic woman like Mary Beth as its county clerk.”
Murphy is active in numerous civic organizations such as the International Lions, and plays a leadership role in several municipal organizations such as the East of Hudson Watershed Corporation. She has years of experience working in both government and the private sector.
Born and raised in Yonkers, Murphy attended the Fordham University School of Law, graduating with a J.D. cum laude. She practiced law in the private sector for 15 years. She moved with her husband to Somers in 1989. They have three children.
“As Supervisor, I have proven my commitment to fiscal responsibility, standing up for taxpayers and fighting against unfunded mandates,” Murphy said. “I pledge to bring my years of experience with annual budgeting, capital project oversight, policy and ordinance formulation and implementation, personnel management and effective constituent communication to the Clerk’s office.”
Murphy questioned whether the incumbent had become complacent after years in office and said more needs to be done to stand up to unfunded mandates, trim costs and increase efficiency.
She was critical of the eight-year incumbent’s handling of pistol licensee disclosure and said she understands the risks of unwarranted disclosure of personal information and would protect taxpayers from the release of private individual information by making thoughtful decisions, which will protect their personal privacy.
“We can do a lot better in our County Clerk’s office,” she added. “We need leadership and someone who can collaborate effectively with all levels of government. I am the right woman for the job.”-30-
