Lalor Announces Gas Tax Cap Bill, Asks Taxpayers to Call Cuomo’s Consumer Hotline to Report Albany’s Gouging of Taxpayers at the Pump
As gas prices rise, Governor Cuomo is targeting a campaign against price gouging at the pump with a consumer hotline and inspectors. While that may stop price gouging, New Yorkers are being gouged with taxes when they fuel up. New Yorkers pay the highest gas taxes in the country, 65% higher then the national average. Albany is gouging drivers everyday. Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R,C,I – Fishkill) is announcing a plan to stop Albany’s gouging of taxpayers by capping New York’s gas tax at the national average for state gas taxes. The plan would save New Yorkers 20 cents per gallon at the pump. “Charging drivers 65% more than competing states is gouging by any definition,” said Lalor. “Price gouging and tax gouging both need to be addressed. The gas tax is regressive and hits hardest the taxpayers who can least afford to pay. New York needs to bring taxes in line with reality and a gas tax cap at the national average will do that.” Lalor will be calling on taxpayers to call the governor’s consumer hotline to report Albany’s tax gouging and demand a gas tax cap.
