Statement on the Gun Control Bill From Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R,C,I-Fishkill)

“Tonight, the governor and Albany’s ‘four men in the room’ are poised to rush through an anti-Second Amendment gun control bill. They are trying to skip past a debate and any hearings to pass this unconstitutional legislation.  It is disappointing to see the governor politicize a tragedy with this bill.”

“While Albany’s ‘four men in a room’ are making a deal behind closed doors, Assembly Democrats are two blocks away at a hotel fundraiser. There’s no time for debate or hearings, but the Democrats are finding time for fundraisers. Albany isn’t serious about making schools safer. If it was, those Assembly Democrats would be here working on this bill. I’m going to stay up all night to fight this.”
“We have had no debate, no hearings, and no expert testimony. If it is a good bill, why does the governor need to ram it through in this fashion? The governor is playing politics. He is trying to beat the President and the Vice President to the punch and pitch his flag pole for 2016.”
“I will not let the governor play politics with the Constitution. I will be voting no tonight.  My message to the governor is: ‘Keep politics out of this. Let’s work together to find ways to make our schools safer. Open this up to debate and discussion. We need a public debate because we are talking about a constitutional right.’ My message to my Assembly colleagues is: ‘Get back to work and be part of the debate. This is too big a decision to simply leave it up to party bosses.'”
