Fishkill, New York: Assemblyman-elect Kieran Michael Lalor announced today that he will be co-sponsoring the Thruway Authority Accountability Act.  The bill is designed to reform the Thruway Authority by increasing efficiency and reducing expenses.

“In November, I promised voters that I would get to work in Albany even before I am sworn in next month,” said Lalor.  “I am proud to get right to work supporting these reforms that will bring accountability and spending responsibility back to the Thruway Authority.”

The bill proposes to merge the Thruway Authority with the Department of Transportation, reducing expenses by consolidating resources and functions between the two.  Also, the bill would require a forensic audit of the Thruway Authority every three years.  Finally, the Thruway Authority would face increased public accountability by mandating that any proposed toll hikes be clearly spelled out in the Department of Transportation’s budget.

Lalor added, “Too many layers of government overlap, duplicating services and functions. This is a good step toward making New York government more efficient and accountable for how it spends tax dollars.  But, it is just one step on a long road to fixing a bloated and broken Albany.  I will continue to work hard to make every government agency and department responsible for every tax dollar they spend.”
