Community Health Center invites community to celebrate opening of new offices in Brewster on December 6

(Ossining, NY, November 6, 2012) – Open Door Family Medical Centers’ Reach Out and Read Program welcomes children’s book author Martha Bishop on Wednesday, November 28 from 3:30 – 4:30pm. Martha will read from her latest book, Rafe’s Grand Performance in the first floor waiting area at Open Door’s Ossining headquarters, 165 Main Street, Ossining. The event is free and open children ages 3 and up. The first 20 children will receive a take-away bag with a book. The event is free but reservations are requested and may be made by calling Kelly Austin at 914-502-1358 or by email at

“Rafe’s Grand Performance” tells the story of Rafe, an inquisitive raven whose curiosity leads him to discover great beauty and great danger. He discovers the powers within himself to deal with both.

Open Door is an official site for the national literacy program, Reach Out and Read, and offers the program at its sites in Ossining, Sleepy Hollow, Mt. Kisco and Port Chester.  Reach Out and Read is geared towards children living in poverty and is designed to take place in a medical environment.  As part of the program, Open Door’s pediatricians and family physicians at the Ossining site distribute new age appropriate books and demonstrate reading techniques at each well-child visit for children from 6 months to 5 years. Volunteers read to children in the waiting rooms, provide instructions on reading techniques to parents and help children choose a book to take home. For more information about Open Door’s Reach Out And Read program, to donate books or to become a volunteer contact Kelly Austin at 914-502-1358 or by email at
