I know how frustrating and inconvenient it is to be without power. I was without power at my own house and many of my staff are currently without power as well.
My office is working closely with NYSEG and Con Edison to restore power as quickly as possible. Please feel free to contact my office at your convenience if I can be of any assistance. We can be reached at (845) 279-3773 or (845) 531-9796.
A few quick updates:
1) We will have a limited supply of dry ice and water available at the Heritage Hills community center in located in Somers started at 12PM today (Thursday). Supplies will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
2) Our Veterans’ Hall of Fame for tonight has been postponed to a later date (TBD).
3) Our Veterans’ Thanksgiving Dinner is still on for this Sunday.
I would also urge you to report damage and apply for FEMA aid. The President issued a major disaster declaration for New York State the night Hurricane Sandy hit, making residents immediately eligible to apply for aid.
I am urging residents to take multiple photos of the damage and first file a claim with their insurance company, then FEMA, right away.
Residents may apply for aid at http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY). Residents are encouraged to immediately photograph all damage and to save receipts for any supplies or equipment purchased. Residents should first file a claim with their insurance companies. Next, they should immediately file with FEMA. Once a claim is filed, a FEMA inspector will be in touch within a few days to schedule a visit. Once an assessment is made, compensation will be mailed or direct deposited several days later to those who are eligible.
FEMA provides up to $31,900 in aid to individuals and households for a variety of needs; although, some forms of Individuals and Households Program (IHP) assistance have limits.
