Albany, NY…October 23, 2012…Today New York GOP Chairman Ed Cox released the following statement in response to Senator Addabbo’s refusal to call on Assemblyman Lopez to resign:
“At a debate last Thursday and in a published report in today’s New York Post, incumbent State Senator Joe Addabbo refused to call for the resignation of Assemblyman Vito Lopez or comment on the subsequent cover-up authorized by Speaker Sheldon Silver.
“The Assembly ethics committee, which found credible evidence that Mr. Lopez committed sexual assault against his female staffers, prompted the Speaker to censure the Assemblyman — stripping his committee chairmanship and accompanying stipend — and authorize secretive taxpayer-funded settlements to the victims in exchange for their silence.
“It’s truly baffling that Joe Addabbo chose to stand by Vito Lopez when many members of his own party, including Governor Cuomo, have concluded that he is not fit to serve public office and must resign,” said Chairman Cox. “The ethics committee found evidence that he is guilty, yet Mr. Addabbo is showing an extreme lack of judgment by not joining his colleagues in calling for his resignation. Councilman Ulrich is correct that if he can’t muster the courage to tell him to step down, he doesn’t belong in office himself.”
