Conflict of Interests: Attorneys hired to represent Village of Monticello pull out

Burke advised each member to seek separate counsel. “Some of you have already been designated as ‘target’ of the District Attorney’s investigation; others have been categorized as either a ‘subject’, i.e., one in whom the District Attorney is interested but not rising to the level of a target; still others have been categorized as a ‘witness’.”

Green Door & Large Media to hold Sullivan County Tweet Up

Green Door Magazine and Large Media will hold Sullivan County’s first “tweetup” November 1st from 6-8 PM at the Dancing Cat Distillery in Bethel, NY. The event marks the first gathering of Twitter users in what the two companies hope draws social media users from nearby regions, including Orange County, nearby Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. What is a tweet up? A “Tweet Up” is a social media experience that will bring local users of the microblogging platform Twitter together during a designated period of time.

Awesome bar food, the world’s best mac & cheese at Monticello, NY’s The Nugget

On the side came what is totally an entree’ sized portion of the BEST mac and cheese I’ve had in my life. Knock, knock. Did you hear me? The best! You might figure the best would be at a meat and 3 in the South or somewhere. Monticello, NY? Yes! It’s made with what I think is smoked sharp NY white cheddar and topped with orange cheddar. If they froze it and sold it through Wegman’s, they’d be jillionaires, as Woody Guthrie used to say.

With the construction of a state-of-the-art 10,388-square-foot building known as the Living Arts Center and a new state certification, New Hope Community can now provide enriching day programming to those with intellectual and other developmental disabilities across the region.

An American flag given to the county soldiers of the 143rd Regiment by residents in 1862 is on display at the Historical Society of Sullivan County. Before it was handed off to the regiment, the flag was flown in every single town within the county at the time. For 150 years, local historians didn’t know the flag still existed, until a little bit of research uncovered that the flag was just a few hours away.

Just about anyone who ever met Noel van Swol remembers him and his passion – especially if you met him on the turf of one of the issues he fought for, or against. He championed gas drilling, battled the merger of three districts into the Sullivan West School District and led the fight against National Park Service involvement in the Upper Delaware River Corridor.

Fracking: Andrew’s endless stall

The Cuomo folks were at it again last week – pretending that the governor could possibly maybe one day allow fracking in this state. On Friday, Department of Environmental Conservation boss Joe Martens admitted that experts set to review the “health impacts” of fracking (drilling for gas or oil in underground shale) have yet to be chosen. But not to worry; they’ll be picked “soon.”

New evaluations for New York State teachers

Teachers and administrators across the state are dealing with a new way of evaluating teacher performance this year; it involves more testing of students and more visits by administrators into classrooms. As part of the process, the New York State Department of Education has approved 107 different rubrics, or sets of standards, for evaluating teacher performance.

It had to be a joke, we thought. No one would seriously create a board to reform the New York Racing Association by filling it with a majority of members from the board of the New York Racing Association. Sadly, it’s no joke. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver used some, or even all, of their picks on the NYRA Reorganization Board to put NYRA veterans on – it bears repeating – the board that’s supposed to fix NYRA.

The Department of Environmental Protection says more than 400 items including quartz projectile points, blades and elements of stone tools were found during work on the 153-acre site of the Catskill and Delaware Ultraviolet Light Disinfection Facility in Westchester County. They date back several thousand years to the late Archaic Era and beginning of the Woodland Period and will be given to the historical society that serves Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.
