Albany, NY…October 8, 2012 — Today, New York GOP Chairman Ed Cox released the following statement in response to the New York Post article reporting that Congressman Steve Israel received debt forgiveness to the tune of nearly $100,000, while Long Island families struggle to stay in their homes:

“While many New Yorkers are struggling to keep their heads above water and make their mortgage payments in these tough economic times, it appears Congressman Steve Israel has used his influence, to gain special treatment and avoid paying back his mortgage obligation, to the bank. The Congressman has taken advantage of his position to qualify for a debt reduction that is supposed to be reserved for hard working families that are experiencing a financial set back. It is not for a congressman that wants to avoid his obligations and a personal financial loss.  On the surface it appears that he would not qualify for such a reduction, so we ask that the House ethics committee investigate the circumstances that surround what looks to be a highly questionable transaction and an potential abuse of power.”
