Today’s Sullivan County Uncensored News:

Gas Drilling Jitters Unsettle Catskills Sales

Coveted for its pristine water, pastoral landscapes and relative proximity to New York City, the Catskills region has long been second-home territory for urbanites. But brokers say many listings are languishing – and not just because of the lag in the nation’s economic recovery. The prospect that New York State will open the region to hydraulic fracturing, a controversial gas drilling process known informally as fracking, has spooked potential buyers.

Spooky Catskills ‘Hotel’ goes kooky

The latest pro-beastie salvo is “Hotel Transylvania,” a serviceable animated movie about a soft-hearted Dracula (Adam Sandler) who runs a Catskills-reminiscent resort where fellow creatures of the night can relax, far from the threat of those terrifying predators called humans.

“Creating some local production capacity, we can give farmers some more options for maybe making a little more money on the milk that they sell,” said Jennifer Mall, Sullivan County Agricultural Planner. The county has received a $186,000 grant from the Department of Agriculture to purchase dairy processing equipment. Officials are seeking proposals from small businesses and farmers looking to lease the equipment.

Cinium Financial Services Corporation (“Cinium”), a leader in credit and bonding for the construction trades, has been named to the 31st annual INC 500 list of the fastest growing private companies in America. Cinium has earned a ranking of 257 overall and 16th in the financial services category after displaying significant growth over the last three years.

Unfunded mandates on things like cyber-bullying, unexpected events such as flooding in the locker room, snow days, grading policies, summer school, homecoming, assessments, parking problems, clothing issues, virtual learning, tight budgets, pets brought to school, cell phones-are issues that regularly come across the desk of the average high school principal. And while the challenges faced by a small rural school district like ECS are no different, Krebs likes to think that there are advantages and strengths that help to offset them.

Les Kristt : Local Memorial Service for our dear Lori Rubinstein:

Danielle Jose, Gary Tugender, and I with the help of Dan Teplesky (Superintendent of Monticello Central School) have been working on getting together a local memorial service for Lori Rubinstein. The Monticello Rotary is the lead group on the service. Lori was a member for a number of years. There have been so many people who have asked for some way to get a small bit of closure with this tragedy. It was very difficult for people to get to Lori’s funeral last Sunday morning. So far we have come up with these plans. The service will take place in the Monticello High School auditorium at 7pm on Thursday evening, October 11. We chose this venue because it is centrally located, with plenty of parking. It also has plenty of room if we get many people there, which we certainly may. Dan will make sure that we have a podium, microphone, access to a projector, and almost anything else we may need.

When all the details are ironed out as to the format, I will post again. If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to send an email lrkristt@yahoo.com back to me. We hope to finalize our plans by next Tuesday evening.

Sadly,Les

With New York set to become the first state to require lawyers to perform 50 hours of pro bono work as a condition for getting a license, Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman and other officials plan to unveil details in Manhattan. A state senator from upstate New York who voted for same-sex marriage and was then defeated in the Republican primary this month said Thursday that he would not pursue re-election as a third-party candidate.

This campaign makes sense at a time when the debate about soaring medical costs has taken center stage in the presidential election. Obesity is estimated to cost $190 billion a year..

Each year, there are roughly 65,000 motor vehicle crashes in New York that involve white-tailed deer, according to state officials, with most of them occurring from October to December – the animals’ three month-long mating season that peaks in November. Because bucks are chasing reluctant does, the animals are more likely to jump into traffic, experts say.
