Sullivan County Retrospect

“As was the case with so many of the hotels, the same indoor pool that allowed the Aladdin to keep pace with the larger, more elaborate resorts, eventually led to its downfall.  The expense of construction was difficult to recover, and the debt was too much for many struggling operations to handle.  In addition, as Komito pointed out, many of the traditional guests could no longer afford the increased rates charged by the ever improving hotels, so they stopped coming, or at least coming as often.”

by John Conway, SC Historian

(as originally published in the Sullivan County Democrat)

It has been a rough few months for the old hotels of the Catskills.

In seemingly rapid succession, fire has destroyed or seriously damaged the old Gibber in Kiamesha Lake, the Tamarack in Greenfield Park, The Brown’s  in Loch Sheldrake, and most recently, the Aladdin in Woodbourne, each time, the flames and the smoke and the water combining to erase a bit more of the physical evidence from Sullivan County’s Golden Age of tourism.

At the same time, these fires have spawned a flood of memories, as folks from far and wide are prompted to recall their connection to the hotel s and to the mountains made famous by them.

I think I ran movies there in 1964 or ’65” Stan Deutsch, formerly of Hurleyville, now residing in California, was moved to say upon learning of the Aladdin fire last week. Read More

Larry Kudlow: Uncertainty Will Cast Pall on Economy, Even If High Court Voids Obamacare

One thing’s for sure. A pure free-market health-care system is not going to happen. Many Republicans talk about a patient-centered consumer-choice system, which would be great. Give consumers tax credits for the same deductions that businesses now have. That also would be great. Include interstate insurance competition. Another winner. Tort reform. Another plus. Read More

Natural gas gold rush: Is your state next?

“A big issue is just change itself. Too often ‘fracking’ gets blamed when it’s the whole package that leads to the problems – the trucks, the noise, the workers, the environmental problems, the feeling of being disempowered by regulations,” says rural sociologist Kathy Brasier of Penn State. “At the same time, there’s no doubt that this industrial activity causes significant change to the landscape, and there are unanswered questions about environmental impacts that concern people.” Read More

Opinion: Court decision on stop, question and frisk puts all New Yorkers at risk
