Lincoln Depot Museum Gets National Attention Special Appearance on National News Network by Lincoln Depot President Testa and Lincoln Reenactor Mike Griest Gives National Exposure to Project

For the 108^th year, the Lincoln Society in Peekskill held the annual events commemorating Lincoln’s stop in Peekskill on his way to his inauguration in 1861. The balmy weather was a welcome change this year and a large crowd gathered to watch the parade and Lincoln’s speech reenacted by Peekskill’s own Mike Griest.

As a Past-President of the Lincoln Society I am always glad to participate in the festivities and promote the history surrounding the event.

Now, as the President of the Lincoln Depot Foundation, I continue my involvement with the project to restore the depot structure and create the Lincoln Depot Museum. The project is moving right along with the exterior restoration done and the interior work 80% complete.

This year, however, was a special year because the Lincoln project now has gained national attention. Since its inception the project received support both locally and beyond. Former NY Governor George Pataki was a key supporter who helped us obtain the funds for the project. Nationally known Lincoln and Civil War historians continue to give their support. Renowned historian and author Harold Holzer has visited the site, participated in events there and mentions Lincoln’s Peekskill stop in his latest book. However, this year was a special year because we were noticed by the Fox News Channel and were invited to appear on the February 12^th Fox and Friends nationally televised morning show.

President Lincoln, aka Mike Griest, and I were able to be guests on the show to promote Lincoln’s birthday, his Peekskill visit of 1861 and the Lincoln Depot Museum that is currently under construction. The appearance was a great boost and has generated a new buzz and interest in the project. Dr. Richard Becker, Democratic Candidate for the 19th Congressional District, announced the host committee for a “Women for Becker” event to be held on March 4th during the first weekend of women’s history month. The event will take place from 1-4 pm at Kathleen’s Tea Room at 979 Main Street in downtown Peekskill, and and costs $75 to attend.

Earlier this year I had the privilege of spending ten days on pilgrimage in the Holy Land, visiting many of the places made holy by the life, death, resurrection and ascension of our Lord, places which the Franciscan Friars have been preserving and protecting for almost 800 years.

In addition to the various shrines, the Friars also support “living stones,” sisters and brothers who live in less than ideal circumstances. I visited a school in Jericho bustling with kids but short on resources, a drug-treatment facility high atop Mount Tabor, and a senior center in Bethlehem. These and many other ministries receive critical support from the annual collection that’s taken up on Good Friday in parishes throughout the United States.

Humans hate making mistakes. But making mistakes is an essential part of being human. To achieve we must learn to live on the edge of this paradox. Success-in all things-is balanced on this fulcrum. Consider the method to “screwing up” successfully:

You Can Only Learn from Others if You’re in the Middle of the Pack

If you’re in it to win it you’ve already decided to lead the herd. Congratulations! But here’s the thing. You’ve volunteered to make mistakes. You’re marked of opportunity and failure; it’s your job to poke the bushes and test the waters, flushing out danger that others avert.

Humans know there is safety in numbers. The dynamic has you living on the edge, but your advantage is wins that come from conquering new territory. The risks are greater, but so are the rewards. If this balance doesn’t appeal to you, move back to center and follow the leaders. Just realize it’s a lot more crowded there, and there might not be enough perks to go around.

The More Unstable the Environment, The More Important it is to Make Mistakes

You don’t need the safety of a herd in safe and stable environments. We call it civilization. It’s on the frontier, where things get precarious, that you need safety in numbers. Ironically, it’s on the frontier where the herd thins out that you often have to go it alone. That leaves you no choice. There is no beaten path to follow. You’re going to have to be the one that forges it. And that means you’re going to make mistakes. Get used to it. Embrace it. Take solace in the fact that while taking action may cause mistakes, not taking action pretty much guarantees you’ll end up as somebody’s lunch.

If You Can’t Get Comfortable, Get Courageous

I often tell aspiring marketers that this is not a comfortable career. If you want security, become an accountant. But if you want a challenge, you’ve found the right niche. Enterprise marketing takes courage. It means trusting your gut and betting on long shots. It means embracing opportunities without a mound of evidence to rely on. To succeed in enterprise, first you need passion–but courage runs a close second.

Mistakes = Learning

I don’t know where making mistakes got such a bad rap, but I shudder to think where we’d be without them (read Ralph Heath’s excellent book, “Celebrating Failure“). You can’t learn without making mistakes. You can’t gain ground without occasionally falling down. I’ve spent the majority of my life as an entrepreneur, which pretty much means the regular making of mistakes, so perhaps I’m used to it. But I honestly don’t know why screwing up has been so stigmatized.

Learn to “Do It Wrong Quickly”

My friend Mike Moran wrote a book a few years ago called “Do it Wrong Quickly, which uncovers one of the essential elements of successfully screwing up: the idea of building learning into the process. BECKER CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION OF GRIMM: ASKS HAYWORTH TO DO THE SAME

Dr. Richard Becker, Democratic Candidate for the 19th Congressional District, today seconded the New York Times call for an independent investigation of Rep. Michael Grimm, and demanded Nan Hayworth take a public stand on the issue. “New Yorkers have had enough of out-of-control insiders and political corruption,” Becker said. “Now, there are credible reports that another Representative has broken the law. Nan Hayworth can either lead the charge for a more ethical Congress and join the growing chorus calling for an independent investigation of these serious charges, or she can follow the orders of the national GOP and ignore an expanding scandal. With so many troubling allegations, Nan Hayworth’s silence is speaking volumes.” This morning, the New York Times called for Congress and the Department of Justice to launch an investigation into shady fundraising practices uncovered by the paper’s reporting. According to the article, Grimm routinely broke federal campaign finance laws during his 2010 campaign and served as business partner with a man convicted of fraud. When asked about the controversy last week, Hayworth admitted that she hadn’t looked into the issue or discussed it with her colleague. Both Hayworth and Grimm are members of the freshman Republican class in the House and serve together on the Financial Services Committee and one sub-committee together. Both have also campaigned on behalf of Mitt Romney here in New York. Background The New York Times called for an independent investigation of Rep. Grimm this morning. In an editorial published this morning, the Times wrote that Grimm’s alleged fundraising activities would have been “illegal for exceeding federal limitations, or being paid improperly in cash, or coming from foreigners barred from giving.” The Times continued by stating that, “those questions should be thoroughly pursued by proper authorities.” [New York Times,2/20/12] The New York Times reported that Michael Grimm accepted illegal donations during his 2010 campaign. Their reporting alleged that Grimm had accepted donations from foreign nationals, donations above the legal limit, and donations from fictitious “straw donors.” The charges stem from Grimm’s involvement with Ofer Biton, who is now the target of a federal embezzelment investigation, and was based on more than a dozen interviews and close scrutiny of Grimm’s campaign finance records. [New York Times, 1/27/12] In a follow up story, the Times also reported serious ethical lapses by Rep. Grimm during his business career. After leaving the FBI, Grimm entered into a $1 million business partnership with a man then under indictment for racketeering and fraud. During the course of their partnership, the business partner was convicted. After the partner was released from prison, Grimm entered into two further business deals with him and campaigned with him. [New York Times, 2/16/12] When asked about the front-page scandal, Hayworth claimed “I have not studied it in any way, I have no comment on it.” When asked about the scandal by PolitickerNY after an event on Monday, Hayworth claimed ignorance. In response to a question about whether she had discussed the allegations with Grimm, Hayworth added “Not really.” [PolitickerNY, 2/13/12] According to prominent attorneys with experience representing organized crime figures, the allegations against Grimm could land him “in front of a federal grand jury.” In an interview with the Staten Island Advance, Attorney Joseph Sorrentino said, “if the allegations are true, they are serious. The reality is, they are crimes. If he took those types of donations, he could wind up in front of a federal grand jury.” Defense Attorney Patrick Parrotta added that “It looks like he has issues all over the place.” [Staten Island Advance, 1/31/12]
